The Sky Watch Event: Astronomical Wonders - Discovering the Night Sky was organized the departments of Physics and Chemistry on 24.01.2025, to provide students and astronomy enthusiasts with an opportunity to explore the marvels of the universe. The event aimed to foster curiosity about celestial phenomena, promote interest in astronomy, and provide hands-on experience with stargazing and telescope observations.
Mr.Muhammed Abdul Hakkeem C welcomed participants and emphasized the relevance of such programs in bridging theoretical learning with practical experiences. Dr. P Jyothi presided over the function. The principal Prof. Muhammed Basheer Ummathur inaugurated the programme.
Mr. Manoj Kottakkal delivered an informative talk on “Discovering the Night Sky”, covering the basics of astronomy, stargazing techniques, and the significance of amateur contributions to the field of astronomy. He shared captivating anecdotes about his experiences as an amateur astronomer and answered questions from the audience.
Telescopes was set up for participants to observe celestial objects. Guided by Mr. Manoj Kottakkal and the faculty coordinators, participants observed planets like Venus, Mars and Jupiter, constellations, and prominent stars through the telescope. Volunteers assisted students in locating celestial objects and using the telescopes effectively. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and gain deeper insights into astronomy, ranging from space exploration to observational techniques.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and members of the public. Participants appreciated the rare opportunity to observe celestial objects and interact with an expert astronomer. Many students expressed their newfound interest in astronomy and requested follow-up sessions.
The Sky Watch Event successfully achieved its objectives of promoting astronomy education and providing hands-on stargazing experiences. The Departments of Physics and Chemistry extend their gratitude to Mr. Manoj Kottakkal for his inspiring session and to all participants for making the event a memorable one.
