State Level IKS Seminar on “Traditional Wisdom for Modern Health Challenges”

The PG Department of Home Science and the PG & Research Department of Chemistry, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, jointly organized a State Level Seminar on “Traditional Wisdom for Modern Health Challenges” on 16th February 2026 at Aryabhatta Hall. The seminar aimed to explore the relevance of indigenous knowledge systems in addressing contemporary health issues and to promote meaningful dialogue on integrating traditional wisdom with modern scientific approaches for sustainable health solutions.The inaugural session began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Jyothi P., Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Muhammed Basheer Ummathur, who emphasized the importance of harmonizing traditional knowledge with modern scientific advancements. The seminar was formally inaugurated by Dr. P. Mohammed Shafi, Retired Professor, University of Calicut, who highlighted the scientific relevance of traditional medical practices and their vital role in modern healthcare systems. The Chairperson of College Students Union, Ms.Aysha Liyana, VI sem. B Sc. Chemistry, offered felicitations for the seminar.The first technical session on “Traditional Drugs in the Light of Modern Science” was handled by Dr. P. Mohammed Shafi, who provided valuable insights into the scientific validation and therapeutic significance of traditional medicines. The second session on “Indigenous Food Practices and Holistic Health” was delivered by Dr. Muhammad Musthafa K.C., Food Safety Officer, Ernad Circle and former Drugs Inspector, Government of Kerala. His talk emphasized the importance of traditional dietary practices in promoting holistic well-being and preventive health. A total of 147 participants, including the students and staff from Majlis College, Vallanchery, Al Shifa College, Perinthalmanna, and Savithri Devi Sabhu Memorial College, Calicut, attended the seminar. The event also served as a platform for  38  oral presentations followed by fruitful discussions. The seminar concluded with a valedictory session during which participants shared positive feedback, appreciating the informative and engaging nature of the programme.The seminar was convened by Dr. Jyothi P., Associate Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry and Dr. N.V. Fatimathu Zuhara, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Home Science. The programme coordinators were Dr. Jasna V.C., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, and Ms. Shahla Karuthedath, Assistant Professor(Adhoc), Department of Home Science. As part of the organizing committee, all the teaching and non-teaching staff, along with final year undergraduate and postgraduate students of both departments, rendered their tireless efforts toward the successful organization of the seminar. The student coordinators, Ms. Famna (3rd Semester M.Sc. Home Science – Nutrition and Dietetics) and Ms. Hana Fathima (6th Semester B.Sc. Chemistry), also played an active role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the programme.
