Photography Contest National Wildlife Day 2023
National Wildlife Day on 04th September was founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige in honour of the late wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin who strived to raise awareness on several issues that all wildlife continues to tackle, which brings attention to the plight of endangered species and their habitats. The day encourages awareness about wildlife species that need a voice. There are so many amazing creatures that call this planet home; hence it is a special day to honour them all.
As part of National Wildlife Day 2023, PG Department of Botany, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri organized a Photography Contest on the themes ‘Diversity of natural habitats’ and ‘Human-Wildlife interaction’ on 04th September 2023 to unlock the beauty of natural elements in their natural habitat within a frame. All the participants including alumnae, students and teachers of the various Departments (Department of Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, English, Home Science, History and Malayalam) portrayed the beauty of nature and conveyed the messages about the importance of maintaining habitats for our favourite creatures. The accepted wildlife photos were judged by Santhosh Mithra T, Artist and Photographer, Art and Photography Unit, University of Calicut, Thenhippalam, Malappuram.
Photos from Bincy TV (1st Semester BSc Botany), Anaswara B (1st Semester MSc Botany) and Vafa Mol (1st Semester MSc Botany) were selected as the best ones among the student’s entries. The wildlife scenes from the alumnae, Alni C Ali (BSc Botany, 2005-2008 Batch), Shirin P (MSc Botany, 2017-2019 Batch) and Fathima Thasni AM (MSc Botany, 2019-2021 Batch), marked as outstanding views; similarly, Fathima Shajitha TK (Associate Professor, PG Department of Commerce), Dr Faseela P (Assistant Professor, PG Department of Botany) and Vineetha MK (Assistant Professor, Research and PG Department of English) were quoted as the best wildlife photographers among the teachers. The contest was coordinated by Dr Deepa P (Assistant Professor Adhoc, PG Department of Botany) and Daliya TP (Fifth Semester BSc Botany) that promoted the broad engagement of present generation to protect all wildlife species by considering the geographical balance. From the collection of captured images, it was easy to see the respect and curiosity towards the nature and wildlife, and the dedication to photograph the beautiful biodiversity of the nature.
