Awareness Programme on Menstrual Hygiene

The PG Department of Home Science, in collaboration with Independents Medicos and the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, Manjeri, organized a Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Session on 4th December 2025 at 2.30 pm in the Aryabhata Hall. The programme aimed to enhance awareness about menstrual hygiene, promote healthy practices, and break the stigma surrounding menstruation among young women. The session began with the Welcome Address by Ms. Bushaira V, Assistant Professor (Adhoc) and Faculty Coordinator, PG Department of Home Science. She highlighted the importance of menstrual health education and its role in improving overall well-being. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Muhammed Basheer Ummathur, Principal, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri. He emphasized the significance of empowering students with the correct information related to reproductive health. This was followed by Mr. Thanveer Ahmed BM, Student Union Vice Chairperson, Govt. Medical College, Manjeri, who appreciated the collaborative efforts and encouraged students to actively engage in the session.
Ms. Nidha Nafeeza, 2025 Batch Student, GMC Manjeri, delivered the Introduction, outlining the purpose and relevance of menstrual hygiene awareness in the present context.
The main session was led by Dr. Anju C, Junior Resident, Department of Community Medicine, GMC Manjeri. She delivered an insightful and interactive presentation on various aspects of menstrual health, including physiology of menstruation, safe menstrual hygiene practices, types of menstrual products, prevention of infections, the role of nutrition, and the importance of seeking medical help for menstrual disorders. She also cleared several misconceptions and offered practical tips on menstrual self-care.
A practical demonstration on the use of menstrual cups was conducted by Dr. Sariga, who explained the benefits, usage techniques, maintenance practices, and safety guidelines associated with menstrual cups. The demonstration helped the students to understand sustainable menstrual hygiene alternatives. The session concluded with a Vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Hiba Kunnath, 2024 Batch Student, Govt. Medical College, Manjeri, who expressed gratitude to the participants, and the organizing team for making the programme a success. Dr. NV Fatimathu Zuhara, Assistant Professor & Head, was the convenor of the programme. Ms. Fathima Arshida MT, 3rd Semester M Sc Home Science (Nutrition and Dietetics) served as the student coordinator for this session. A total of 111 students actively participated in the awareness session and they gained a comprehensive understanding of menstrual hygiene and its direct impact on health.
