OVERVIEW

The Department was started in 1992 with a UG programme. The following years marked the department's progress, including updating the faculty. The subsidiary courses are Chemistry and Zoology. Add-on Courses, Certificate Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics are also provided. The Department has the prestige of securing university ranks consistently since its inception.

Home Science is an applied subject and an interdisciplinary field of studies comprising Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textile, Resource Management, Human Development and Extension Education and Communication. It is a multidisciplinary education for better living. Home science is an applied science built upon both the discipline of science and humanities to achieve the welfare and well-being of the family and society. Under UGC, Family and Community Science is a professional course. It deals with the core needs of a human being; food, shelter and clothing. Today the Home Science curriculum has been restructured and scientifically planned to make it multi-dimensional and skill-oriented. Backed by a competent faculty team, the department excels in every aspect of higher education. The curriculum is designed to provide formal education in Home Science, equipping young women with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead in their future.

 

 

DEPARTMENT AT A GLANCE

The Dept of Home Science offers an undergraduate course in Family and Community Science and a self-financing postgraduate course in Home Science (Nutrition and Dietetics). The postgraduate course commenced in the year 2013. The department is equipped with a well-developed nutrition lab, textile lab and biochemistry lab. The department with well-placed alumni is actively involved in teaching and extension activities. Extension activity and outreach programmes are organized regularly by the department like nutrition camps, workshops and awareness programmes. The department in collaboration with various national and state agencies, also conducts and observes National Nutrition Week, Breastfeeding Promotion Week, World Diabetes Day, World Food Day etc. Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programmes were conducted for aspiring women of the community on various themes. The department organizes and conducts exhibitions, seminars, conferences, lectures, and workshops to create awareness and update students and the community on recent emerging health and social issues and their combating. Best practices like Pothichoru, and Earn While Learn are the highlights of the department.
