‘POTHICHORU’ A Community Care Initiative

The PG Department of Home Science has been implementing ‘Pothichoru’, a Community Care Initiative, since 2017. This programme is a student-led humanitarian effort aimed at extending support to families experiencing financial hardship. The aim of the initiative is to cultivate social responsibility among students while providing meaningful assistance to needy households in the community. The objectives of Pothichoru include mobilising small individual contributions from students, identifying economically backward families, and supplying them with essential food items.
As part of this initiative, a minimum of Rs.20 was collected from each student. Using the funds, the department identified a deserving family and purchased essential supplies such as cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits and other food items. For the month of November, the Pothichoru distribution was carried out on 5th December 2025, and the provisions were handed over to a family residing at Kuruniyenkil, Narukara. All UG and PG students, along with the faculty members of the department, actively participated in this meaningful outreach activity.
The Convenor of the programme was Dr. NV. Fatimathu Zuhara, Assistant Professor and Head, PG Department of Home Science. Lt. Loosiya KP, Assistant Professor (Adhoc) and Ms. Shifana Sharin. MP, VI Semester BSc FCS, served as the faculty and student coordinators respectively. The outcome of the initiative highlights the department’s commitment to community welfare and the students’ growing sense of empathy, teamwork and service, demonstrating how small acts of kindness can create a positive impact in society.
