Community Outreach Programme ‘Eat Right for a Better Life’ BMI Assessment & Nutrition Awareness Class for School Students

As part of the National Nutrition Month (Poshan Maah, September 2025) celebrations, the PG Department of Home Science, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri organized a BMI assessment and nutrition awareness class for 10th standard students of Al Huda English School, Patterkulam, Manjeri on 26th September, 2025. The session, titled "Eat Right for a Better Life," aimed to educate students about the importance of nutrition and healthy eating habits.The programme started at 2:30 pm with a welcome address by Mr. Moideenkutty, Principal, Al Huda English School and Lt. Loosiya KP, Assistant Professor (Adhoc), PG Department of Home Science. A total of 70 students and 9 teachers participated in the programme. The BMI assessment revealed that 27 students were underweight, 29 had a normal BMI, 12 were overweight, and 2 were obese. Among the teachers, 5 had a normal BMI, 3 were overweight, and 1 was obese.The BMI assessment and awareness class was handled by III Sem M.Sc. Home Science (Nutrition & Dietetics) students, led by Ms. Fathima Arshida MT and Ms. Fathima Dilraz KC, who discussed the importance of health and nutrition for adolescents. Ms. Muhsina, Ms. Nadeeda O, and Ms. Shifa Rinshi shared dietary guidelines for different BMI categories, while Ms. Farsana Shirin K, Assistant Professor (Adhoc) highlighted the importance of healthy, low-cost food items.The session ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Nadeeda O, Student Coordinator, III Sem M.Sc. Home Science (Nutrition & Dietetics). The programme was coordinated by faculty members Dr. NV Fatimathu Zuhara, Assistant Professor and Head and Lt. Loosiya KP, Assistant Professor (Adhoc) of the PG Department of Home Science. The positive feedback provided by the participants ensured that the event successfully promoted awareness about nutrition and healthy eating habits among students and teachers, encouraging them to adopt those habits in their daily life.
