Visit to National Institute of Nutrition (NIN)

On 3rd January 2025, the final year B Sc Family and Community Science students of the PG Department of Home Science visited the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), the most prestigious public health, nutrition and translational research centre located in Hyderabad, India.  The visit aimed to enhance the understanding on the operational research activities conducted at NIN in connection with the several national nutrition programmes and its role in monitoring the diet and nutrition situation of the country. The visit started with a documentary show narrating the establishment of NIN, its functions and community oriented research activities. Then, Dr. Devraj IP, Scientist, Department of Clinical Epidemiology, NIN, delivered a talk on “Nutritional, Anti-nutritional Composition and Health Benefits of Millets”. The students had an interaction with him on the commonly consumed millets in Kerala, their processing and preparation techniques. They also visited the nutrition museum and food analysis laboratories. The technical assistants explained the working mechanism of instruments and procedures involved in the analysis of nutrients. Apart from developing a better understanding on the significance of NIN in uplifting the nation’s nutritional status , the visit inspired the young minds to explore the career opportunities at NIN and other community nutrition projects. 
Dr Annie Ninan, Associate Professor & Head and Dr Fatimathu Zuhara N V, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Home Science accompanied and guided the students during the visit.
