Department at a Glance

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1991, initially offering Chemistry as a subsidiary subject for the B.Sc. Home Science course. In 1993, Chemistry was introduced as a main subject, and since then, 29 batches have successfully completed the B.Sc. Chemistry program as of March 2024. The department achieved a significant milestone in 2013 by becoming a Postgraduate Department, with 10 batches completing the M.Sc. Chemistry course as of March 2024. In 2023, the department was further elevated to a Research Department. In 2024, the Department of Chemistry introduced the B.Sc. Honours program as part of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in line with the recommendations of higher education authorities. This initiative aims to provide an advanced and comprehensive curriculum, equipping students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in Chemistry to meet contemporary academic and professional demands.

Chemistry, as a specialization in science, explores the nature and properties of various compounds and the myriad reactions occurring around us. It opens up stimulating career opportunities across diverse fields, playing a crucial role in the development and growth of industries essential to daily life, such as paper, textiles, leather, paints, petroleum, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. Chemistry equips individuals with practical skills that are highly applicable in everyday life. Research in Chemistry contributes to advancements such as the development of new medicines for treating life-threatening diseases. A strong foundation in Chemistry enables the proper identification and application of chemicals for suitable purposes.

The field offers a wide range of job opportunities for those with a degree in Chemistry. Furthermore, knowledge of Chemistry fosters environmentally conscious thinking and actions, contributing to sustainable practices.
