World Environment Day Celebration and MoU Signing Ceremony The P.G. and Research Department of Botany, in association with the Bhoomithrasena Club, Biodiversity Club, and Nature Club of Korambayil Ahamed Haji Memorial Unity Women's College (Autonomous), organized the World Environment Day Celebration and MoU Signing Ceremony on 5 June 2026 at the Botany Lab. The programme was conducted to commemorate World Environment Day and to promote environmental awareness among students and the academic community. The event was inspired by the World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Nature: For Climate, For Our Future.”
The programme began with a warm welcome to the gathering. Dr. Faseela P presented a brief outline of the programme and highlighted the significance of the day's activities. Dr. Usman A, Head of the Department of Botany, addressed the audience and spoke about the importance of World Environment Day, emphasizing the need for environmental conservation, sustainable living, and collective action to protect biodiversity and natural resources for future generations.
A special highlight of the celebration was the presence of Mr. Narayanan, OISCA International Club Member, who brought a Nagalingam ( Couroupita guianensis ) sapling and gifted it to the Department on this meaningful occasion. He shared his personal experiences and lifelong association with trees and plants, inspiring students to develop a deeper appreciation for nature and environmental stewardship. His heartfelt message reinforced the importance of nurturing and protecting the green wealth around us.
The keynote session titled “Double Trouble for Nature: Climate Change and Biological Invasions” was delivered by Mr. Aleem Yoosuf N, Senior Research Fellow, KSCSTE-MBGIPS, Kozhikode, WWF India ECHO Fellow Champion ’26, and Founder of ELATHAND and the NeophyteID App. Through an informative and engaging presentation, he explained how climate change and biological invasions interact to create severe challenges for ecosystems and biodiversity. The session was highly appreciated by the participants for its relevance, scientific insights, and interactive discussions. Students gained valuable knowledge about contemporary environmental issues and the importance of research-based conservation efforts.
An important milestone of the programme was the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony between the Department of Botany and the Tropical Biodiversity Action and Research Center (TBARC). The collaboration aims to strengthen academic, research, and extension activities related to biodiversity conservation, ecological studies, and environmental education. The MoU is expected to create new opportunities for student engagement, research collaborations, and capacity-building initiatives in the field of biodiversity and conservation.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, faculty members, and invited guests. Their active involvement contributed greatly to the success of the event and reflected the institution's commitment to environmental awareness and sustainable development.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ajmal Rasak, Programme Coordinator, who expressed sincere gratitude to the resource person, guests, faculty members, students, and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.
