OVERVIEW

The Department of Botany was established in 1995, with the introduction of B.Sc. Botany course as the fifth undergraduate programme in the college during 1995-’96. It has the privilege of being the first B.Sc. Botany course in the whole of Malappuram district. The course was officially inaugurated by Jb. E.T. Muhammed Basheer, the then Hon. Minister for Education, Govt. of Kerala on 21-01-1996 in the presence of Jb. Panakkad Syed Muhammed Ali Shihab Thangal (Late), Jb. P.K. Kunhalikkutty, the then Minister for Industries, Jb. Ishaak Kurikkal MLA, Jb. Korambayil Ahamed Haji (Late), the then manager of the institution and several other dignitaries assembled for the inauguration of the present campus at Koodakkara. The course was started with 18 students only and now the intake capacity is raised to the statutory maximum of 50 students. During 2013-’14 M.Sc. The Botany programme was introduced in the unaided stream with an intake capacity of 12 students and during 2020-’21, we got sanctioned to a second batch of M.Sc. Botany in aided stream with an intake of 10 students. At present, the intake capacity is raised to a total of 40 in both streams, 20 in aided and 20 in unaided streams respectively.
