Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights

The Department of Botany, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Rights Information Centre–Kerala (IPRIC-K), KSCSTE, organized a Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights on 27 November 2025 at Aryabhatta Hall. The programme began with a formal inaugural session graced by the presence of Principal Prof. Muhammad Basheer Ummathur, who officially inaugurated the seminar and highlighted the relevance of IPR awareness in the academic and research community.

The technical sessions commenced with Dr. Lawwellman, Associate Professor, Government Law College, Kozhikode, who served as the first resource person. His session provided an in-depth understanding of the legal foundations of Intellectual Property Rights, covering patents, copyrights, trademarks, and related legislation. He emphasized the need for researchers, innovators, and students to be aware of the legal protection mechanisms available for safeguarding their intellectual contributions.

The second session was handled by Adv. Febin James, Advocate and Partner, M/s Legalites IP Services, Thrissur. His talk focused on the practical aspects of filing and processing patent applications, common errors made by applicants, and the role of legal expertise in navigating intellectual property procedures. His examples and case studies helped the participants gain clarity on real-world applications of IPR.

The third technical session was led by Ms. Chaithanya P.C., Project Scientist-I, Patent Information Centre–Kerala, KSCSTE. She discussed the various IPR support systems and facilities offered by KSCSTE for students, faculty, and innovators in Kerala. Her session also introduced participants to patent search tools, funding schemes, and the significance of documenting innovations systematically.

As part of the programme, a felicitation was offered by Dr. Hussain K., Associate Professor, Department of Botany. He highlighted the importance of integrating IPR awareness into higher education and appreciated the efforts of the organizers for conducting such a meaningful academic event. His remarks encouraged students to think creatively and consider the value of protecting their original work.

The seminar was coordinated by Dr. Faseela P., Assistant Professor, Department of Botany and Shuhaila M, 3rd Sem MSc Botany. The sessions were well received by students, researchers, and faculty members, who actively participated in the discussions. The programme concluded with an interactive Q&A and a vote of thanks, marking the seminar as an enriching academic experience.
