National Reading Day/Week 2024 Celebration
Shihab Thangal Library and Information Centre, in collaboration with the Readers Forum and Library Literary Club, organized the National Reading Day/Week 2024 celebration at KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, on 19th June 2024 at 10 AM in the AC Seminar Hall. The celebration successfully underscored the importance of reading in personal and academic development, leaving a lasting impact on all attendees.
Prof. (Dr.) Muhammed Basheer Ummathur, the College Principal, delivered the inaugural address, followed by a reading pledge, reinforcing the commitment to reading. His speech focused on the transformative power of reading and the significant role that libraries play in education. Prof. Basheer Ummathur also declared Ms. Fathima Thasni K, a 2nd-year BA History student, the Best Reader of the Year 2023-24, recognizing her outstanding efforts as a dedicated reader.
Dr. Hikmathulla V, Head of the Department of Malayalam, delivered an inspiring message on the importance of reading and its role in promoting and exploring various life experiences. He also highlighted the contributions of Malayalam literature to the global literary landscape, encouraging students to explore their rich literary heritage.
A Book Review Competition, a significant event for fostering reading habits among students under the Shihab Thangal Library and Information Centre, was also announced. This competition aims to encourage critical thinking and analytical skills among student readers. Interested participants are to write book reviews on the topic “My Favourite Book,” with a minimum of 1000 words. The competition, starting today, ends on 25th June 2024. The winners will be awarded vouchers of Rs 2000 and Rs 1000 for the first and second prizes, respectively, sponsored by Calicut Books, providing them with the opportunity to expand their personal libraries.
The program started with a welcome speech by Mr. Yunus TP, UGC Librarian, followed by the presidential address by Mr. Sidhique P, Coordinator of the Readers Forum and Library Literary Club. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Omniyah, the Student Convenor of the Readers Forum.
