The PG Botany Department is committed to the study and research of plants, exploring their structure, function, ecology and evolution. It plays a crucial role in educating students on core Plant Science concepts, preparing them for careers in research, agriculture, conservation and biotechnology. The department offers undergraduate (BSc) and postgraduate (MSc) programs, covering a wide range of botanical topics. Students gain practical experience through modern laboratories focused on plant biology, microbiology, genetics and biochemistry. The department also organizes field trips and excursions to explore plant diversity, ecosystems and conservation efforts. Actively involved in conservation initiatives, the department works on projects such as cultivating medicinal plants, establishing botanical gardens and promoting biodiversity preservation. Additionally, students participate in workshops, seminars and conferences related to botany, and the department hosts plant exhibitions, environmental awareness campaigns and community outreach programs.

Lab facilities:

Botany lab – UG:

Botany Lab for UG students is a dedicated space equipped with essential tools and resources to support the practical study of plants. It provides students with hands-on learning experiences in plant biology, enabling them to explore key concepts in areas such as plant structure, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, taxonomy and ecology. Lab serves as an interactive environment where theoretical knowledge is applied through experiments and observations, enhancing student’s understanding of Plant Sciences and fostering skills needed for advanced studies or careers in botany.

Botany lab – PG:

PG Botany Lab is essential for advanced study and research in Plant Sciences. It provides a practical foundation for students to apply theoretical knowledge and engage in high-level scientific exploration. The lab is necessary for in-depth research, advanced learning, practical skills, innovation and discovery. The lab facilities included advanced research equipments, plant tissue culture facilities, growth chambers and controlled environments, computing and data analysis resources.

Tissue Culture Lab:

Tissue Culture Lab is equipped with a variety of specialized facilities and tools to facilitate the growth and cultivation of plant tissues, cells and organs under controlled, sterile conditions. These facilities are essential for conducting research, plant propagation, genetic engineering and conservation projects. Key facilities included media preparation room, inoculation room and culture room. The facilities enable researchers to manipulate plant tissues and cells for propagation, genetic improvement, disease resistance and conservation. The lab’s sterile and controlled environment ensures the successful growth and development of plant cultures, which is critical for advancing agricultural practices, plant biotechnology and environmental sustainability.

Instrumentation Room:

Instrumentation Room in a college is a specialized facility equipped with advanced instruments and equipment for conducting scientific experiments, research and analysis in various fields of botany. The room plays a crucial role in providing students and researchers with the tools necessary for hands-on learning and experimentation, supporting both practical courses and advanced research projects.

Museum:

The Department has a well displayed Museum with preserved plant specimens of Algae (25), Fungi (20), Lichen (4), Bryophytes (20), Pteridophytes (25), Gymnosperm (15), Xerophytes (5), Hydrophytes (10), Epiphytes (4). In addition to these, economically as well as ethnobiologically important specimens are also displayed.

Herbarium:

Herbarium serves as a collection of preserved plant specimens that are systematically arranged and catalogued for research, teaching and educational purposes. It plays as a valuable resource for students, researchers and faculty, enabling them to study plant diversity, classification and morphology. Seven hundred specimens arranged according to Bentham and Hooker classification and maintaining well for future reference. The specimens of algae (70), bryophytes (100), pteridophytes (150) and gymnosperms (30) are also included in the collections.

Library:
Department library houses a comprehensive collection of books, journals, research papers and reference materials covering various aspects of botany including Plant Taxonomy, Physiology, Ecology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Embryology, Cytology, Anatomy, Bryology, Phycology, Pteridology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry and Biotechnology. The library provides access to both classical texts and contemporary research, fostering a conducive environment for learning, study and research. With its vast array of resources, the Botany Department Library plays a vital role in enhancing the knowledge and academic growth of botany students.
