Invited lecture on “Understanding Interdisciplinarity: Texts, Contexts and Crafts”

The PG and Research Department of English, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, organized an invited lecture on “Understanding Interdisciplinarity: Texts, Contexts and Crafts” on 17 September 2025 at Aryabhatta Hall. The session was delivered by Ms. Hamda Hanan, Research Scholar at Farook College (Autonomous), and was primarily intended for postgraduate students of English literature. In her lecture, Ms. Hanan highlighted the relevance of interdisciplinarity in contemporary literary studies, stressing how texts acquire richer dimensions when examined in relation to disciplines such as sociology, history, psychology, media, and cultural studies. She argued that interdisciplinarity not only broadens interpretative possibilities but also fosters critical innovation in research. The lecture further addressed the art of academic writing, where she underscored the importance of coherence, clarity, and originality in research papers while warning against over-dependence on secondary sources. Practical guidelines on structuring arguments, refining research questions, and sustaining critical engagement were shared, providing students with concrete strategies to enhance their scholarly writing. Another significant aspect of the talk was the discussion on potential journals for publication in English studies. Ms. Hanan emphasized the necessity of identifying credible, peer-reviewed platforms, adhering to submission protocols, and ensuring ethical scholarship. She also mapped a systematic road map to research, beginning with identifying relevant problems, conducting literature reviews, and choosing appropriate methodologies, to effectively framing research questions. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, where students sought clarifications on interdisciplinary approaches, publishing opportunities, and research challenges, to which the resource person responded with practical insights. Coordinated by Dr. Shahina Mol A K (Head, Department of English), Dr. Aswathi M P (DQAC Convenor), and student coordinator Shifna Jahan A M( Third Semester MA English), the programme proved an enriching academic exercise that inspired postgraduate learners to approach research with intellectual openness and methodological rigor.Ms. Fathima Fida V. V. of first semester MA English extended vote of thanks to the session.
