Auditing of Non-Biodegradable Waste Management in Manjeri Municipality and Pulpatta Panchayath Material Collection Facilities (MCF)
On 10th January 2025, the Bhoomithrasena Club of KAHM Unity Women's College, Manjeri, conducted an extensive audit of the non-biodegradable waste management systems in the Manjeri Municipality and Pulpatta Panchayath, in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) and Shuchitwa Mission, Government of Kerala. The audit aimed to evaluate the existing waste management facilities and identify potential improvements. In the forenoon, the team visited the Manjeri Municipality Town Ward Material Collection Facility (MCF). They assessed the waste collection, segregation, and storage systems, noting the processes for handling non-biodegradable waste, such as plastics and metals, and their contribution to promoting a cleaner environment.
During the afternoon, the club members visited the Pulpatta Panchayath MCF to conduct a detailed inspection of its operations. The MCF coordinators, Mr. Jamsheer, Mr. Dinesh and MCF workers provided an in-depth explanation of the facility's functioning, including waste separation, baling of recyclable materials, and disposal practices. They emphasized the significance of maintaining an efficient waste management system to address the growing challenges of non-biodegradable waste in Kerala. The visit provided valuable insights into the structured methods employed to manage waste sustainably, underscoring the importance of collective action in addressing environmental issues. The program was coordinated by Dr. Faseela P, Bhoomithrasena Club Coordinator, along with Amal Shah, a 4th-semester BSc Botany student. Through these visits, the participants gained a better understanding of the importance of separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and the role of MCFs in reducing environmental pollution. The audit highlighted the need for awareness and active participation in proper waste disposal to foster a sustainable future.
