Department of English
31st December 2024 – 5th January 2025
The Department of English, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Manjeri, organized a five-day study tour from 31st December 2024 to 5th January 2025. A group of 37 final-year BA English students, accompanied by staff members Ms. Sangeeta K and Mr. Sidhique, embarked on an enriching journey exploring the cultural and literary heritage of Chikmagalur, Dandeli, Goa, and Malvan.
1. Chikmagalur (1st January 2025)
Known for its coffee plantations and scenic beauty, Chikmagalur offered students insights into the regional culture and history of Karnataka. The visit to ancient temples and historical sites enhanced their understanding of local traditions and architectural styles. Discussions highlighted the role of coffee in colonial trade narratives and literature.
2. Dandeli (2nd January 2025)
The lush forests and wildlife sanctuary of Dandeli provided an opportunity to explore eco-literature themes. Students observed the natural habitat and biodiversity, drawing parallels between environmental literature and real-world ecological concerns. Activities like river rafting also emphasized teamwork and experiential learning.
3. Goa (3rd January 2025)
The vibrant culture and rich colonial history of Goa served as a live classroom. Visits to churches, forts, and museums brought alive the influence of Portuguese colonization, a topic frequently discussed in postcolonial studies. Walking tours in Old Goa offered immersive experiences in local heritage and architectural grandeur.
4. Malvan (4th January 2025)
The coastal town of Malvan, known for its Sindhudurg Fort, provided lessons in maritime history and fort architecture. The water activities the student engaged in at the coastal areas offered a memorable blend of adventure and cultural immersion. Participants enjoyed thrilling water sports, including scuba diving and parasailing, exploring the vibrant marine life.
This study trip was a valuable experiential learning opportunity that enhanced the students' theoretical knowledge by offering practical exposure to cultural and historical contexts. It fostered critical thinking, broadened cultural perspectives, and encouraged reflection on themes of place, identity, and heritage in literature.
The trip also strengthened bonds between students and faculty, promoting collaborative learning and peer interaction outside the classroom.
