Following the syllabus and curriculum prescribed by Calicut University, the Department of English focuses on teaching English Language and Literature, Cultural and Critical Theory emphasizing the perspectives of feminism, cultural studies and subaltern studies.
A pass in the Plus Two Examination of the Kerala Higher Secondary Examination Board or the Board of Examinations of any other State of India, or the Central Board of Secondary Education or the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, recognized as equivalent to the Plus Two of the Kerala Higher Secondary Examination Board with not less than 450% marks in aggregate. However, SC/ST, OBC and other eligible communities shall be given relaxation as per the Calicut University Rules and Guidelines.
B. A. English Language and Literature (Model II) Teaching programme is a three-year course structured into six semesters. The total number of courses for the programme is 30. To fulfill the requirements of the course the students have to submit a project in the sixth semester and take a Via-Voce Examination based on it. is 26. The Thirty Courses are divided into the following:
Undergraduates in English Language and Literature (Model II) acquire introductory knowledge in the history and structure of the English Language, the Evolution of English Literature, Indian Writing in English, Postcolonial Literatures and the basics of Education and English Language Teaching. Graduate who have undergone this Model II Programme in English can find avenues in higher studies and careers related to teaching and Literary Studies. They may turn to courses in journalism to find opportunities in the realm of media. With the essential language skills acquired through this programme they can also turn to the world of advertising, especially as copy writers. They can be successful bloggers able to analyse social issues with a critical eye. Or they may toe the line in focusing on careers in the Civil Service and other government jobs through writing competitive exams.
